6. Miles, Foila, Melito, and Hallvard

While recovering from his illness, Severian worries about the threat posed to him by Hethor and Agia.  He is visited by his soldier companion, who is healthy but still suffering memory loss. Severian introduces the man as Miles to Foila and her suitors.

Miles pulls Severian aside and indicates that he is about to depart the lazaret in search of his company.  Severian employs a turn of phrase that surprises Miles.  Showing Miles the Claw, Severian confesses that he revived the soldier from the dead.  Miles is incredulous.
