29. Autarch of the Commonwealth

Walking among the massive Ascian army, Severian observes the enemy of the Commonwealth.

Overnight, a messenger enters the camp and summons the Autarch and Severian.  Hands bound, Severian is led through the Ascian encampment and ushered into a metallic, domed structure.  Inside, Vodalus presents Severian and the Autarch to three female Ascians.

The Ascians question whether the Autarch is present and Severian is evasive. Vodalus whispers to Severian that the Ascians are transmitting their conversation to their overseers in the north.

Vodalus argues to retain custody over the Autarch, who he believes to be his operative in the House Absolute, and over Severian, who he has promised to Agia.  The Ascians deny the requests and Vodalus departs.  The Autarch and Severian are seized by Ascian guards and imprisoned.
