Disoriented, Severian explains his assumption that Talos was the small man described by the villagers as the steward of the castle. Baldanders confirms that he ordered the construction of the fortress and that he has grown immense over time. He explains that he manufactured Talos as his personal physician and artificial companion. The aliens acknowledge that Baldanders has induced his extreme growth to extend his life.
Severian asks for the return of the Claw of the Conciliator. Intrigued, Ossipago asks to examine the gem. Severian explains its purported powers to the cacogens. Baldanders retrieves the Claw from a nearby drawer and turns it over to Ossipago, who concludes that it is not miraculous.
Questioning Severian’s claim to the Claw, the aliens advise that he and Baldanders must decide its rightful owner.
