33. Ossipago, Barbatus, and Famulimus
Dr. Talos leads Severian up a flight of stairs and through a door into a room cluttered with antique machines. Hearing again the wailing of prisoners, Severian questions Talos about the castle’s residents. Talos indicates that he is keeping the captives for spare parts.
Recalling Baldander’s assault on the cacogens at the House Absolute, Dr. Talos urges Severian to behave cordially. As they pass through the tower, Severian notices a flayed woman stored in an oversized jar.
Talos introduces Severian to three aliens, Famulimus, Barbatus, and Ossipago, who are disguised as men. To Severian’s astonishment, the cacogens bow and address him with reverence.
