27. On High Paths

Unable to operate the hovercraft, Severian climbs from the eye of the mountain to the abandoned city below.  He rests in the town before departing.

Hungry and alone, Severian resumes his journey through the highlands.  He ruminates on the mountainous landscape and reflects on the nature of the alzabo and other dangers.  Thecla’s memories help Severian navigate to lower elevations.
