22. The Skirts of the Mountain

Hearing the scream, Decuman redoubles his concentration and Severian feels the power of the spell growing.  A creature comprised of black sludge pours into the room and overwhelms Decuman. 

Lifting the boy and slashing at the beast, Severian climbs to the rafters.  He cuts through the thatched roof with Terminus Est and sets the building afire.  Severian leaps to the ground below and runs with the boy into the forest.

The pair reach the wall of vines where they had entered the jungle.  They make camp near a stream and Severian is overcome by surreal images in a dream.
