Frostfree

Frostfree

Appliance salesman Roy Tabak discovers an unfamiliar refrigerator in his kitchen.  He remembers neither ordering nor taking delivery of the sleek, new model.  Opening the fridge, Roy is surprised to find it fully stocked.  He considers a beer and hears a woman offer him assistance.  Roy ignores the sound and, disoriented, sits down in his living room.

Roy, concerned for his own well-being, dials a psychiatric help line and reports hearing a female voice in his empty kitchen.  The agent placates Roy, urging him to call back if the speaker returns or becomes sinister.  Roy disconnects, settles into a chair, and grumbles that his bachelor lifestyle is out of step with baseball’s television schedule.

Returning to the kitchen, Roy takes a seat across from the refrigerator.  The man and the machine regard one another.  Roy opens the fridge door and removes a beer and some chips.  He asks aloud for dip, and the female voice offers three varieties. Roy asks the appliance to identify its make and learns little.
