18. Severian and Severian
Little Severian drinks at the river and asks to return home. Severian resolves that they must travel away from the main roads and into the mountains. As they enter the range, Severian describes the mountains as carved into the likenesses of past rulers of Urth.
Questioned by the boy, Severian describes the half-beast attackers as zoanthrops. He explains them as former human beings, who have transitioned from thinking men to base animals through lobotomy. As they hike, Severian marvels at the mountains and reflects on the teachings of Master Malrubius.
