17. The Sword of the Lictor

The next morning, Casdoe leaves provisions for Severian at her doorstep and departs the house with her father and son in tow.

Severian reflects on his promise to the alzabo not to track the beast or to remain in defense of the house.  He concludes that his word does not prohibit him from following Casdoe, and he tracks her along a muddy path.

Following the footsteps of Casdoe and her family, Severian notices the tread of several other large, bare feet.  He wonders whether mountain men or deserters from the warfront are nearby and hurries to catch up with Casdoe.

Severian hears a mad shout ahead of him. Cresting a hill, he sees Casdoe and her family set upon by a pack of half-beast men.  Severian prepares to intervene but hesitates.
