5. The Lazaret

Severian drifts in and out of sleep as the Pelerines tend to him.  He considers returning the Claw of the Conciliator to them but delays the transfer.  

Severian searches for his soldier companion.  He questions a gaunt man occupying the bed beside his own and receives cryptic answers.  A female patient introduces herself as Foila and implies that the man is an Ascian.
