4. Fever

Increasingly disoriented, Severian stumbles along the road to the lazaret.  He and the soldier arrive at the encampment and are greeted by a Pelerine.  The woman diagnoses Severian and his companion as diseased and sends them to be treated.

Severian notices that the soldier has regained his ability to speak and asks the man about his past.  The soldier fails to recall any of his memories or his name.  Severian is helped to bed and clasps the Claw.
