29. The Hetman’s Boat

Confined to a dark storeroom for several days, Severian endures potent hallucinations.  His memories mingle with those of Thecla.  As he recovers his senses, Severian concludes that the hetman likely intends to remand him to Thrax.  If so, he resolves to kill himself.

Two men enter the holding room and retrieve Severian for the hetman.  Severian demands his release but is rebuffed.  The hetman describes his allegiance to a ruler in a nearby castle.  He explains that he sent the Claw, and will send Severian, to the stronghold.

Pia is instructed to wash Severian, naked and bound.  He asks that she recover Terminus Est.
