18. Foila’s Request

Continuing along the path to the Pelerine camp, Severian senses the intermittent and incorporeal presence of Ash.  Severian ruminates on companionship and reflects on his past lovers. He recalls his encounter with Valeria in the Atrium of Time and his revival of Triskele.

As he considers the miracles attributed to the Claw, Severian is approached on the road by a mounted soldier.  The man questions Severian, reviews his letter of safe passage, and advises him not to hurry to the lazaret.  He suggests that Severian join the cavalry once he leaves the service of the Pelerines.
