13. Into the Mountains
Avoiding the villages in the lowlands, Severian sets off into the mountains. He disguises himself as a local wanderer and modifies Terminus Est to resemble a walking staff. Below him, Severian notices soldiers patrolling the roadways.
Hungry and cold, Severian camps in an outcropping of rock. Dozing, he envisions Hethor nearby. Severian observes the constellations, above, and imagines the societies of far-off planets. In view of the Moon, Severian recalls and renews his boyhood desire to travel into space.
