1. The Dead Soldier

Camping in the wilderness, Severian reflects on war and observes the flash of energy weapons in the distance.  He is without provisions and searches several abandoned houses for food and water.

Severian follows a trail through the hills.  He hears the approach of a cavalryman and hides.  After watching the rider pass, Severian locates a stream, bathes, and drinks.
