14. Mannea

Deferring his verdict in Foila’s tournament, Severian wanders out of the lazaret and into the camp of the Pelerines.  He enters a chapel and observes a Pelerine ritual.  The room empties, and Severian pretends to pray before whispering in earnest to the Increate.  

Holding the Claw of the Conciliator, Severian approaches the altar.  He offers a blessing to the relic and, fearful that it will be stolen, hides it inside the joinery of the table.  Severian departs the church and feels sorrow and elation in relinquishing the gem.
