21. Deployment

Guasacht and his compatriots patrol the wilderness and engage in several skirmishes.  After a few days, the mercenaries assemble in columns and ride for battle.  As they break camp, Severian discusses the female warriors and the division of money among the fighters.

Several massive war machines pass overhead, frightening and scattering the mounted soldiers.  In the commotion, Severian notices Daria and remembers his past lovers.
