12. Winnoc

One of the slaves to the Pelerines visits with Severian.  The old man introduces himself as Winnoc and identifies Severian as a lictor.  He shows Severian scars left on his back as the result of a punishment inflicted years earlier by then-Journeyman Palaemon.  Severian acknowledges the torturer as his former instructor.  Winnoc suggests that Severian might deliver a message to Palaemon.

Winnoc recounts his conversations with Palaemon, who describes his guild and advises Winnoc to search out a brotherhood of his own.  With this guidance, Winnoc attempts to join various trades and professions without success.  He resolves to enlist as a sailor.  On his way to join a crew, Winnoc encounters a slave of the Pelerines and is convinced to sell himself to the religious order.
