10. Ava

After discussing Melito’s story with the ward, Severian helps a Pelerine postulate serve dinner.  The woman, Ava, lingers to talk with Severian.  She comments on the progress of his recovery.

The pair discuss their shared hometown of Nessus.  Severian displays the scar from his battle with Agilus on the Sanguinary Field.  Ava unwittingly describes witnessing the duel, but Severian does not acknowledge the connection.

Ava explains her religious order, Severian comments on the Conciliator, and the two debate whether Ascians are human beings.  Ava asks whether Severian is a twin and remarks on the presence of Thecla.
