VII. “…WHERE ONLY DELIGHT LIVES…”

Unable to sleep, Japhet visits a newsstand in the early morning.  He discusses with the vendor a headline announcing the landing of Martian forces on Earth.  Both take a dim view of America’s ability to repel the Martians and their Chinese allies.

Energized, Japhet gathers his possessions and strikes out of New York without leaving a note for John or Anna.

Elevated to the role of Chief of Civil Police, the Captain inspects a Russian reeducation facility.  He reassures the site’s chief administrator, Aleksandr Vasilievich, of the war’s progress and America’s fighting prowess.  Dubious, Vasilievich compares the poor condition of the country’s military with the advanced state of the Martian war machine.

Vasilievich leads the Captain to a room occupied by catatonic captives, each drugged and brainwashed.  He explains the commonplace nature of the interventionist practice in his home country and offers the Captain the opportunity to sample the training.  After some thought, the Captain agrees and accepts an intravenous hypnotic solution.
