The Friendship Light
Writing under a pseudonym, Ty describes his rural homestead and that of his late brother-in-law, Jack. He reflects on his sister, Tess, being committed to an asylum and on the strange occurrences in her absence.
Ty receives a letter from Jack asking that he visit. Jack meets Ty along a trench dug in front of Tess’ former home. Indicating a court date and errands in town, Jack asks Ty to look after his house and oversee the installation of a gas-powered lamp. Ty needles Jack and, disinclined towards his brother-in-law, considers refusing the request.
Jack tries to withhold the key to the house, noting that Tess’ cats are no longer permitted indoors. Ty agrees to look after the property – his childhood home – but on the condition that he be granted access.
Ty enters Jack’s house and feeds the cats. He considers switching one neutered pet for another in the hopes of saddling Jack with a litter of unwanted animals. Ty sets the prank aside but turns over other ideas.
Several technicians install the friendship lamp, and one shows Ty how to ignite the flame and regulate the flow of gas. The light flickers, but Ty sends the workmen on their way.
Returning inside, Ty settles down with a book and reads until nightfall. He spots the light thrown from the gas lamp and formulates a scheme.
Ty removes the gas shut-off valve and glues the lamp’s regulator open on its highest setting.
Finding Jack’s diary stored on a series of cassette tapes, Ty transcribes his findings.
Jack reflects on his meeting with the judge and hears his paramour, Nicolette, call to him from the bedroom.
Nicolette tells Jack that she spotted a man lurking outside in the gloom. Taking up his flashlight, Jack investigates but finds no one. He suspects Ty as the trespasser.
Returning indoors, Jack learns that Nicolette heard the backdoor open and close. He is surprised to find the lock secured and a cat loose in the kitchen.
Jack rigs a camera and a flashbulb to take photographs of himself having sex with Nicolette. His lover encourages Jack to buy more film for future romps, but he weighs whether to send her home.
