9. The Salamander

Leaving the children’s home, Severian observes the lights of the city and assumes that its gates have been drawn against his departure. He resolves to visit Dorcas before fleeing Thrax.  While thinking of her and devising his escape, Severian notices an unusual flash of fire and feels a burst of heat.

Severian becomes lost and collides with an innkeeper.  Fearful and frantic, she urges Severian to run from an unseen danger. Severian senses a sinister presence, recalls his encounter with the notules, and draws Terminus Est.  

Two mounted soldiers arrive, their weapons illuminating a dark monster.  Emitting an otherworldly heat, it advances on the troopers and Severian.  Two additional cavalrymen confront the beast and Severian flees with the woman.
