8. Upon the Cliff

On his departure from the Acies Castle, Severian encounters several armed guards.  The troopers advise that he remain at the party or travel with an escort.  Severian declines both suggestions, although he suspects danger in the city.

Rather than return to the Vincula, Severian makes his way to the hovel of the sick children.  As he passes through the poor districts of Thrax, Severian expects an alarm to be raised and for him to be pursued by the soldiers of the archon.

Severian enters the children’s shack with the Claw of the Conciliator in hand.  He approaches the girl, whose critical condition has worsened, and places the blue gem on her forehead.  Instantaneously, she is healed.
