8. The Cultellarii

Returning from the forest to the inn, Severian and Jonas discuss the decision to let Agia live.  Jonas concludes that Agia presents a future danger and for that reason he would have killed her.  Feigning an execution, Jonas raises the club he retrieved from the man-ape and finds it to be crafted of solid gold.  Jonas offers to share his windfall with Severian.  

The next day, Severian and Jonas sit for a meal in preparation for the execution of Barnoch.  Severian recounts his battle with the man-apes, their reaction to the Claw, and the booming footfalls that caused them to flee.
