8. The Conversationalist

Following the instructions of Master Gurloes, Severian undertakes to become Thecla’s companion.  He brings her dinner and they discuss religion and life after death.  Thecla shows Severian her gown and indicates that her requests for more clothing have gone unanswered from the House Absolute. She suggests that Severian sell a piece of her jewelry so that she may purchase new clothes.
