8. Blow the Man Down

Alarmed, Cassie urges the injured Gideon to sit and rest.  Gideon is pleased to learn that he is sought by the authorities and the press.  

Cassie outlines for Gideon her conversation with Margaret.  Gideon considers whether Reis might return the gold bracelet to Margaret.  He speculates as to Reis’ purpose in reclaiming the gift.

Reflecting on his conversation in the Oval Office, Gideon remarks on several distinctions between the humans of Earth and the inhabitants of Woldercan.  Among them, he explains to Cassie, is the Wolders’ ability to synthesize radioactive gold.  Gideon posits that Reis learned this technique while serving as ambassador to the foreign world.

At Cassie’s insistence, Gideon recounts the abortive attempt on his life and the suturing of his leg.  Believing Reis to be responsible, Gideon urges Cassie to take precautions.  Cassie worries that Gideon remains in mortal danger.
