7. The Traitress

On returning to the Matachin Tower, Severian is instructed to deliver dinner and the requested books to Thecla’s cell.  It is apparent that Thecla is receiving deferential treatment, as her room is well furnished and she is wearing a gown.  Despite her imprisonment, Thecla is elegant and Severian becomes infatuated.
