5. The Bourne

Jonas and Severian return to the inn for dinner.  Severian reflects on the execution of Morwenna and indicates that the mayor will not pay for his services until the following day when Barnoch is to be killed.  Jonas remarks on Severian’s despondency, which concern Severian dismisses.

Severian notices and retrieves a note passed under the door to his room.  The letter purports to be from Thecla, who claims to have faked her death at the instruction of Father Inire.  Thecla instructs Severian to rendezvous with her in a nearby mine.
