5. Dating the Volcano God
Cassie arrives to the cast party with Margaret in tow. She pauses to speak with India’s assistant, Ebony, about their next show. Several of Cassie’s fellow actors encircle her and rave about her performance. Cassie wonders aloud about the origin of India’s angel investor.
India joins her cast and announces that Wallace Rosenquist, the backer of her new project, will soon join them. Cassie describes her departure from the theater via utility tunnel to avoid an unwelcome caller.
Cassie instructs Margaret to call Gideon and ask that he join her. The show’s leading man waylays Cassie and leads her to a table of other performers. Cassie confides her burgeoning fear and asks for a strong drink. Margaret returns to inform Cassie of the messages she left for Gideon and of Jimmy’s sudden death.
India calls the party to attention, announces Dating the Volcano God, and introduces the musical’s patron. Rosenquist joins India, and Cassie recognizes him as Reis.
After commending the company, Rosenquist singles out Cassie to receive the gift of a massive gold bracelet. Cassie accepts reluctantly, and Rosenquist whispers a private invitation.
