5. Cyriaca

Severian explores the grounds of the Acies Castle while the guests gather.  As he takes in their costumes, Severian contemplates the nature of authenticity and the return of the Conciliator. 

Noticing a Pelerine in the crowd, Severian charges across the party to her.  She greets him as Death.  He begins to apologize for carrying the Claw, a relic of her religious order, before recognizing that the woman is in costume.  She faints.
