4. Triskele

While cleaning drains between the Matachin Tower and the Bear Tower, Severian finds a pile of dead fighting animals.  He touches one of the creatures, a large three-legged dog, and it revives.  Severian names the injured beast Triskele and resolves to take care of him.  To that end, Severian convinces a journeyman guard to hand over his voluminous black robe as a disguise. Hiding under the cloak, Severian and Triskele enter the lowest level of the oubliette, which is deserted. Severian operates on Triskele. Later, Severian sneaks food to Triskele and dreams of the dog speaking to him.
