4. The Unseen Audience

Cassie accuses Gideon of tapping her phone.  Gideon denies spying on Cassie and offers a benign explanation for their meeting.

Sharon approaches Gideon and Cassie’s table.  Gideon whispers instructions to Cassie not to mention Reis. Thinking them to be a couple, Sharon stages an impromptu photoshoot of Gideon and Cassie for publication in the local paper.  A waitress fawns over Cassie and her celebrity.  Gideon offers Cassie a ride home.


While in Gideon’s car, Cassie voices concern about being under surveillance.  Gideon offers to share additional information with Cassie once they reach her apartment.  Cassie invites Gideon to watch Sharon broadcast their purported relationship on a daytime television show.  Hoping to catch Reis’ attention, Gideon is delighted by the prompt publicity. 

Cassie enters her apartment while Gideon briefly visits her neighbor’s.


Jimmy, the doorman, greets Cassie on her arrival to the theater.  Taking the stage, Cassie senses her surreal transformation and notices her castmates’ reactions to her brilliant performance.  Cassie spots an empty seat in the audience suddenly and briefly filled by Reis.


India Dempster, the play’s director, announces the curtain call.  The crowd erupts in applause for Cassie, who accepts the praise before retreating to her dressing room and examining her appearance.  

Cassie is visited by a fellow actor’s assistant, Margaret, who asks to be hired by the new starlet.  After haggling over wages, Cassie sends Margaret on an errand.
