4. In the Bartizan of the Vincula

On his return to the Vincula, Severian is informed that the archon has called on him.  He slips to his quarters, changes into his torturer’s habit, and reads a poem left behind by Dorcas.

Entering his office, Severian encounters the archon, Abdiesus.  They discuss Severian’s rank in the Order of the Seekers of Truth and Penitence and arcane forms of execution.

Abdiesus extends to Severian an invitation to a costume party at the Acies Castle.  Insinuating a covert assassination, the archon instructs Severian to come dressed as a torturer and to carry the tools of his trade.  Abdiesus departs and Severian ruminates on Dorcas and the dying girl in the hut.
