31. The Shadow of the Torturer

On the day of the execution, Severian stands on the platform and observes the gathering crowd.  He scans the square and sees Dorcas and some of his admirers from the previous night.  He does not see Agia.

Several soldiers bring Agilus to the scaffold and kneel him in front of the block.  With a swing of Terminus Est, Severian executes Agilus.  He hears Agia scream.  A military commander orders Agilus’s body dragged away by a pack animal and pays Severian for his service.
