3. Outside the Jacal
Descending the ramparts of the castle, Severian approaches the river and Dorcas. She is despondent and refuses to speak. He leads Dorcas to a nearby inn and rents her a room in which to recuperate.
Believing her to be upset with him, Severian defends his duties as a torturer and his treatment of the prisoners at the Vincula. Dorcas cries before falling asleep. As he leaves the inn, Severian is admonished by the innkeeper.
