29. The Herdsmen

Crossing a sugarcane field, Severian, Dorcas, and Jolenta arrive at a wide prairie.  They notice feral cats strapped to trees and encounter territorial herds of cattle.  Severian kills an onrushing bull.

Recalling its power over the man-apes, Severian uses the Claw to tame a black bull for Jolenta and Dorcas to ride.  Carrying the Claw, Severian sets a bound tiger free and commands circling carrion birds.

Severian and his companions reach an earthen hut and meet a herdsman, who is astonished by Severian’s command over a wild bull.  Dorcas asks to enter the hovel so that Jolenta can rest.  The man admits them but indicates that the building is occupied by a dying man, Manahen.
