29. Agilus

No longer in need of medical treatment, Severian is asked to leave the infirmary.  Before they exit the encampment, Severian buys Dorcas a dress.  The pair notice a crowd in front of the Hall of Justice.  A man identifies Severian as a carnifex and requests that he perform an execution following the trial of an accused murderer.  Severian agrees and is eager to practice his trade. After some difficulty, Dorcas and Severian locate a room in which they can spend the night.   

By custom, Severian inspects the executioner’s platform and visits the prison in which the condemned man is being held.  As he approaches the prison door, Severian hears a woman crying.
