26. Parting

Jolenta, Dorcas, Talos, and an injured Baldanders reunite with Severian. Relieved, Dorcas kisses Severian.  Jolenta describes the aftermath of Baldander’s outburst and their encounter with the Autarch’s guard.

Dr. Talos indicates that the troupe is rich from the performance and credits Severian’s connections in the House Absolute with their success.  Dividing the pot, Talos explains that a servant of the Autarch delivered a large sum to him in payment for the show while Severian and Jolenta rode the river.  

Dorcas expresses concern for Baldander’s injuries, but Talos tells her that Baldanders will heal as he grows.  

At a crossroads, Talos and Baldanders turn towards their home on Lake Diuturna and instruct Severian to continue on to Thrax with Jolenta and Dorcas.  Jolenta begs to remain with Talos.
