24. The Flower of Dissolution

Dorcas picks a flower from the surface of the lake and places it in her hair. Severian contemplates the landscape and the nature of reality.  Noticing him in thought, Hildegrin observes that Severian must be dwelling on the duel and his impending death. Dorcas grows concerned for Severian and they discuss the balance of good and evil in the world.  She places Severian’s hand on her breast and cries.

Hildegrin docks his boat on the shore near the averns.  Severian describes the plants as geometric, iridescent, and potentially extraterrestrial.  Agia offers to demonstrate to Severian how to pick a branch but Hildegrin stops her.  Hearing Hildegrin’s voice, Severian realizes that he has met the man before.
