24. The Flier

Recovering from his delirium, Severian wakes on a bed inside a silk tent.  A man enters, sits beside Severian, and acknowledges that he is the Autarch.  

Recalling his visit to the House Azure, Severian again asks why he first encountered the Autarch in a bordello in Nessus.  The Autarch acknowledges his many personas, from courtier to criminal.  Severian worries over his past allegiance to Vodalus and asks whether he will be executed.  The Autarch comforts Severian.  

Two half-cat women enter the tent and tend to Severian.  Their paws remind Severian of the Claw, and he weeps.  Thinking Severian in pain, the Autarch chastises his servants.
