24. Dr. Talos’s Play: Eschatology and Genesis

Severian recounts the play performed during the Autarch’s festival on the grounds of the House Absolute.

Gabriel proclaims the setting of the Old Sun and the imminent rising of the New Sun.  A giant, Nod, searches for Meschia’s son, but is rebuffed by Gabriel.

Meschia and Meschiane establish a homestead in the Autarch’s garden under the eye of Nod and the temptress, Jahi.  The Autarch visits with Meschia and Meschiane, who mistake him for a god.  He flirts with Jahi, who rebuffs him and attacks Meschiane.

The Contessa enters the garden and Meschia strikes her.  She recognizes and fears the coming of the New Sun.
