22. The City Under the Sea

Cassie questions Schoonveld about her assailant but learns little.  The doctor casts doubt on the woman’s given name, Diana Diamond, and her purported species and gender.  At Schoonveld’s request, Cassie agrees to meet with a spy held by the high king in captivity.

Schoonveld admits Cassie to the room holding Diana in bed.  Diana and Cassie discuss Reis’ annexation of the islands and his rout of the Storm King’s followers.  Cassie offers to trade the would-be assassin’s life for information.  Diana spits in Cassie’s face.

After washing up, Cassie sits with Schoonveld.  The doctor compliments Cassie’s appearance, but she ridicules her reflection.  Schoonveld explains to Cassie the reasons some are attracted to the cult of the Storm King.  He reflects on the Squid God, his domination of Earth and his repulsive effect on other alien visitors.

Cassie prepares to meet with the spy sent by Reis to infiltrate the court of the Storm King.  The doctor indicates that the captive returned to the island broken, sick, and silent.

The queen introduces herself to the wasted body of Pat Gomez.  The sickly woman stands, takes Cassie’s hands, and offers a vision.
