2. In the Black Car

Settling into her apartment after returning from the theater, actress Cassie Casey finds a note from Gideon slipped under her bedroom door.  The message promises riches and stardom in exchange for her help and directs Cassie to rendezvous at a local Baskin-Robbins.  Suspecting a break-in, Cassie arms her security system and locks her front door.

Cassie is intrigued by the cryptic letter and calls Sharon Bench, a local reporter, to learn more about Gideon.  Sharon relays several stories about the purported wizard, including rumors of him healing a sick child and mediating an international dispute.

Reflecting on her slim professional prospects following the closing of her latest play, Cassie considers exploring an opportunity to work with Gideon.

Cassie arrives to the ice cream parlor shortly before closing time.  She negotiates unsuccessfully with the teenage attendant to keep the store open late.

A man reminiscent of Cassie’s second husband barges into the store and escorts Cassie to his car.  Cassie deduces that the man works in law enforcement, although he refuses to identify himself.

The pair drive to a nearby parking lot, where Cassie is directed to an unattended black sedan.  Cassie alludes to carrying a gun, which prompts the driver to snatch and search her purse for weapons.  Reluctantly, Cassie takes the passenger seat of the unmarked car.

Cassie awakes to Gideon driving the car at speed down the highway.  She accuses him of breaking into her apartment, and he acknowledges the transgression.  On Cassie’s probing, Gideon reaffirms his promise of fame and riches but warns of danger.
