19. Great Takanga

Riding in his hopper, Cassie wonders whether Gideon would have intervened to stop Scott’s murder.  She peppers him with questions about his concurrent work for Reis and various government agencies.  Gideon justifies his multiple allegiances. 

En route to the South Pacific, Gideon encourages Cassie to remain stateside with him.  Cassie offers a small kiss but affirms her plan to meet Reis on Takanga. Gideon mentions his efforts to become appointed ambassador to Woldercan.

Cassie alights on the tarmac of Takanga’s airport, and Gideon departs.  A local porter, Hiapo, greets Cassie with reverence and gathers her bags.  Hiapo refers to Cassie as high queen of the island and escorts her to a fine hotel, where she is provided the royal suite.

Taking in the island, Cassie visits several stores.  In each, she is given products without charge.  Back at the hotel, a maid combs Cassie’s hair.  Cassie asks after the high king and his anticipated arrival.

Cassie explores the capital city of Takanga and learns about the island chain, its royalty and customs.  Donning a bathing suit, she swims in the ocean and suns on the beach.
