17. The Challenge

Upon entering the shop, Severian is asked by the shopkeeper to sell his torturer’s habit and sword.  Severian refuses. The merchant raises his offer repeatedly but cannot change Severian’s mind.

Noticing that the man is wearing a mask, Severian tells him to remove it.  Under the disguise, the clerk resembles the woman that spoke with Severian outside of the shop, his sister.
