15. Fool's Fire

Encircled by prisoners and pressed by their questions, Severian becomes separated from Jonas.  An old man and a woman, Nicarete, clear the crowd and introduce themselves to Severian. 

The man, Lomar, offers to exchange information with Severian.  To that end, Severian describes how he and Jonas were captured on the grounds of the House Absolute.  Lomar recounts his affair with the Chatelaine Nympha that led to his imprisonment in the Antechamber.  Surprising Lomar and Nicarete, Severian recognizes the Chatelaine through Thecla’s memories.

The lights of the prison begin to dim as Lomar, Nicarete, and Severian discuss their captivity.  Severian is directed to a pallet near Jonas.  Panicked, Jonas insists that they escape and urges Severian to use the Claw to free them.  They resolve to try the locks after the others have gone to sleep.
