14. Ask Our Friend

After enduring several rounds of questioning about the abduction, Cassie is brought to the office of Detective Lieutenant Lars Aaberg.  Cassie, astonished, recognizes Aaberg and learns of Corby’s release. 

In exchange for her cooperation, Cassie asks that Aaberg acknowledge their prior run-ins.  Recalling their meeting at Baskin-Robbins, Aaberg admits to staking out Cassie’s apartment on Gideon’s word.   

Cassie and Aaberg consider possible motives for the kidnapping of Margaret.  In the middle of their conversation, Aaberg fields a call from the local mayor expressing concern over Cassie’s confinement.
