13. The Claw of the Conciliator

Severian and Jonas examine the body of the soldier attacked by the notules.  Jonas removes two of the creatures from the man’s nose and places them in a brass container.  Severian learns from Jonas that the animals are extraterrestrial and attracted to heat.

Jonas pulls the last notule from the man’s mouth, seals it with the others, and throws the jar into the river.  As two men approach, Severian uses the Claw to revive the soldier.  Dazed, the soldier sits upright and slowly regains his senses.
