11. The Feast

Severian describes the Feast of Holy Katharine, in which members of the Order of Seekers of Truth and Penitence are elevated from apprentice to journeyman and from journeyman to master.  He recounts a legend in which an army lieutenant joined the torturers for their feast, only to become so drunk that he injured and later killed himself.  Since then, no one but the torturers themselves attend the celebration.
