10. Dating Wallace Rosenquist
Apprehensive, Cassie dresses for dinner with Rosenquist. She watches from her window the arrival of a limousine, its driver approaching her building and its rear door opening of its own accord. Preston, the doorman, asks Cassie whether to admit the chauffeur. Cassie refuses him entry to her apartment, despite the driver’s insistence.
Rosenquist phones Cassie, apologizing for his tardiness. He asks that she meet him for dinner at Rusterman’s. Cassie accepts the invitation, arms her security system, and rides in the limousine to the restaurant.
After being seated by an obsequious hostess, Cassie receives a call from Preston. He informs her of an alarm triggered in her apartment. Unable to return home, Cassie asks that Preston leave word with the building’s handyman.
An admiring waitress serves Cassie water while commenting on the restauranteur, Wade Rusterman.
Rosenquist joins Cassie at her table, and she greets him as Reis. The pair discuss the menu and place their orders. Reis admits to breaking into Cassie’s apartment and finding a note about Gideon and a sizeable check. Unphased, Cassie evades Reis’ line of questioning.
Reis and Cassie spar over each other’s trustworthiness. She needles Reis by revealing him as Rusterman. He praises Cassie’s beauty and announces his intention to win her affection. Recounting his own checkered relationship with Gideon, Reis offers a profitable partnership to Cassie.
